Thoughts on this week's Daria episode
"Quinn The Brain"
They're getting better. The episodes, that is. I think that this episode hit especially close to home since this sort of thing happened at my school. The scenario: most of us honors kids are rarely recognized for ouor extra effort- we're just given that extra .5 on out GPA and sent on our way. However, when this really dumb stoner kid pulled his GPA up from a D to a B in one semester, he was honored in front of the whole school, given a t-shirt and a plaque, and a nice little speech on his academic achievements was given. This was a crock, because the kid didn't maintain his new scholarliness after that. This episode reflected something that happens all too often in our schools.
I also want to say that from an editor-in-chief's point of view, I'd never put Quinn's essay in my paper :)
Daria dressed as Quinn frightened me. Although I guess it proves that she isn't figureless as some people thought. I had just hoped that I could make it without seeing Ms. Monday Night as a sex object. But I guess Baywatch Daria was a precursor to that. I don't think that was really necessary, but if MTV was going for shock value, it worked here. Although I was under the impression that Daria didn't own anything pink. Hm.
"Oooh, you high school...Casablanca!" <--- choice line :)
I liked it. The idea of Quinn becoming a brain was farfetched, but it was pulled off with a certain degree of finesse.
Good episode. It was nice to see the episode not focus on Helen and Jake this time. Although we still need to see more of Jane. I'd like to see an episode that focused on her. And we still haven't seen Jesse! But he has an alter-ego (the golfer) so I guess we'll just have to wait and see....right, Moreno-ites? ;)
Eagerly anticipating next week,
